Under the {Summer} Weather

Oh summer, how I love thee!  You're filled with grilling and swimming, corn-on-the-cob, mountains of watermelon...and strep throat.

Can you even believe that the middle of July had three of our four littles down with a nasty bug? I truly thought that it was darn near impossible to come down with the funk while sunflowers are in bloom and the grass requires weekly cutting. But alas, it's not, as my pediatrician informed me while he collected my co-pays and wrote out prescriptions for Amoxicillian. He also kindly told me that even a tonsillectomy doesn't leave you exempt-to which I swallowed hard and then preceded to bath in hand sanitizer. Thankfully, Jer and I, as well as Gracie Girl managed to stay unscathed and the boys are now finished with their medicine and back to their old selves. And we are hoping *and praying* that the last of it is gone with the toothbrushes we threw out!

Unfortunately, a raw throat wasn't the only thing our Judah Boy came down with. Monday morning found him sick as a dog and as a result he ended up having a seizure {his second in the last four months}. While his first one was a couple of months ago at his Mimi and Pop's {after he slipped and hit his head while washing his hands in the bathroom}, this one happened here at home while I was alone with the kids. And while it could have gone a million different ways, the Lord graciously worked it out so that the other three kids were completely safe and QUIET while I was on the phone with 911 and attending to Judah. In fact, my total worrier and fearful boy Benny at one point looked right into the eyes of his terrified momma and calmly said, "Momma. Just call the ambulance." Sweet boy! After about twelve minutes, the fire department and rescue team arrived and proceeded to take his vitals and get him hooked up to oxygen and an IV. Although I was completely oblivious to the look of concern on Ben and Abe's faces, in a stroke of genius moment, one of the firemen took them outside for a tour of the fire truck {complete with horn honking and sirens} and then pushed them on the swings until things weren't so scary. A few minutes later, the paramedics arrived and tried to load him up to transport him to the hospital downtown, but another firefighter kindly told them that we'd be waiting for Jer to get home so I could ride with Judah in the ambulance. Those men must have been daddies, huh?! Oddly enough, the same paramedic who transported Judah to the hospital the last time, just happened to be doing a rotation in the East Mountains and was dispatched to our house this time. We had a total, "I know you!" moment right after she arrived and it was nice because the laugh sort of broke the tension and made things a bit more comfortable. Plus she worked her skills at the ER and got us right in and seen right away.

Once we were in a room, Judah basically crashed out. So much so that his nurse was able to give him medicine WITHOUT WAKING HIM UP. Seriously, the boy was dead to the world. After about 5 hours of monitoring, two Subway sandwiches for mom and dad, a Gracie blow-out of epic proportions, a dose of Motrin, a dose of anti-nausea medicine, and 16 oz. of apple juice, our boy was awake, completely irked with his blood pressure cuff, and using the potty down the hall {did I mention he POTTY TRAINED through all of this??} Soon the ER doc sent us on our way with orders to follow up with the Pediatrician, a prescription for Strep, and very grumpy boy. As soon as we got back to Mimi's to pick up B&A, however, his mood had changed as he was the star-of-the-car. A very curious Benny loudly asked, "Bubbas! Tell us about the ambulance!" To which Ju replied, "It-had-yites {lights}!" A few minutes later, he was chomping on a slice of pizza and drinking a Gatorade while we waited for his prescription to be filled. Such a wild day!

We did follow up with the pediatrician the next day {which could be a blog entitled, "Sarah takes three sick kids and a nursing infant to the doctor's office-ALONE-sits in an examining room for an hour and forty minutes-during lunch time-and then cries the entire way home!"} and he referred us to a Pediatric Neurologist to have an EEG done. So for now we wait...and pray that these were just two isolated incidences...and bake those awesome firefighters a big ol' plate of cookies.

In The Thick of It

The other day I was looking at my blogging history and was tickled to see that I had several hundred posts in 2009, half of that in 2010, half of that in 2011, and now 2012 doesn't look any more promising.

I tend to blame it on the laundry.

But maybe it's more the little people who make the laundry :)

So after  nearly a two week absence, where to start?

Maybe by saying we're in the thick of it.

Today finds me thirty weeks and two days pregnant and tomorrow I go for an MRI that will determine if my knee will require surgery and before or after this baby comes. Now I could go into all the details of the last four months...but really none of it matters. Tomorrow the doctor will, Lord willing, have a clear understanding of what the next course of action is. While our hope is that RELIEF is part of that action, we are also just trying to rest in the promise that the Lord works all things for our good.

All things.

Even these nesting, exhausted, hobbling mess kinda days.

Back tomorrow with an update.

The Broken Boy Blues-Updated

Our Benny boy is doing a lot better this evening! Still a far cry from 100% but at least we've seen a couple of smiles tonight :) Here are a few pictures for those of you who have been asking...
Yup, that's his collar bone!
Lovely, huh?
-------------------------------------------
Between returning Monday night from a five day trip to Austin and a half day ER trip yesterday, there are about a million and half things that are in need of my somewhat immediate attention. Since it's almost been two weeks since I posted though, and two of my three are still sleeping, I decided to allow myself ten quick minutes this morning to post about my sweet Benjamin who took a nasty spill in the backyard yesterday morning. While we're not really sure what or how it happened; what we do know is that he fell and on his collarbone. After a couple of x-rays, two doc's and a radiologist say it's not broken but that it's either a green stick fracture or a separated ligament or tendon. Either way, it is extremely painful and our poor guy is not up for much more than sitting with mom or dad and watching movies. And since there's not much they can do  to treat a collar bone injury except wait for it to heal, we're just relying on pain relievers every four hours and the tiniest sling EVER. I seriously think the hospital borrowed it from a teddy bear in the gift shop or something : )
All in all, our boy is fairing well, despite his ouchiness. His ability to still try and milk us for fruit snacks is a good reminder of that. I think he ate approximately 47 bags yesterday, as opposed to the usual strict allotment of one! And while yesterday was quite the long day and we all hit the sheets a little run down, I've been praying all morning long that a good night's sleep will make all the difference today.
Times up! Time for this nurse-momma to hand out some fruit snacks medicine!

Couch Potatoes

My little Benny-Boy has been fighting a high grade fever for about the last 24 hours so needless to say, he's been a little down and out. As an extra special treat for my sick boy and his consequentially home bound brother, I set them up on the fat sack for a super rare treat, TV. Today's showing was Horton Hears a Who and The Deuce absolutely dug it! As for me, I dug how sweet they looked, side by side, watching their movie. I can't tell you how tempted I was to disrupt them and take the spot in between!

What a Week!

Whew! Ben and I are glad this one's behind us!
--------------------------------------
UPDATED: In other exciting news, Ben cut his first tooth teeth! FINALLY.The second one cut this morning! I am serious when I say that I thought that this kid would start school toothless. Really?! Who cuts their first tooth at 12 1/2 months? Probably lots of kids. Come to think of it, the comments will probably flood in now about how this person's neice, or that person's grandson didn't cut teeth until way later. But honestly, Abe is up to 6 teeth! Now combine that with 3 pounds heavier and he looks like a 4 year old next to Ben!

Also on the frontlines this week, Mister A.B. has been on the hunt for the cat. He will do anything to get to her! Unfortunately, the feelings are not quite mutual. She keeps a safe distance. Case in point...
This is also where she *hides* from the dogs!

He just can't quite figure out how to manuver his way to the middle!

And because I can't resist, here's a picture of The Deuce gettin' their groove on...

Desperate times, this week, called for desperate measures...

Here's hoping for a better one!

Four Sickies and a Benji Brag

Our whole house is sick this week. The boys have bronchitis and Ben has an ear infection to top it all off! I think I have what the boys have and Jer is unsure if he's messing with bad allergies or a cold. Yuck, all the way around! So needless to say, blogging is light this week, as it falls low on the priority list. Please keep us in prayer though!
On the upside, amidst his pitiful state, Ben said his third word (mama, dada) this week! Abe! It's absolutely hilarious and has brought much humor to our otherwise doll-drum week. Anytime Jer or I say Abe's name Ben echos it, only his sounds a bit more like "Ebb" because of his stuffy nose :) Definitely don't want to forget that one.

When the Chips Are Down

The boys and I all have a touch of something. Mostly, it's just consisted of snotty noses (them) and a sore throat (me). Not too bad, but it's enough to keep us home and away from all of our weekly play dates that we look forward to. So in anticipation of the slew of housebound days that lay ahead of us, I realized that some out of the box thinking might be in order. Translation: what can they play with that doesn't resemble their everyday toys and that might hold their attention for longer than a nanosecond?
Answer:

Jer likes to think that it's just early grooming for Christmas in Colorado

I think we need to work on A.B.'s poker face

Ben's smiling cause he can see Abe's hand

That's some serious concentration going on
